Heavy swell that disrupted the preliminary surveys of the wreck of MV Estonia subsides, operations to resume

Rene Arikas, the director of the Estonian Safety Investigation Bureau, announced late last night that due to poor weather conditions, the vessels that had commenced the preliminary surveys of the wreck of MV Estonia were forced to leave the shipwreck site for the night.

"The weather forecast today showed that we have a window to continue the surveys until midnight. At the moment, EVA-316 and Electra af Askö are heading to the survey site, and at night they will be seeking safe anchorage on the Estonian coast," Rene Arikas said.

Last night, the Swedish research vessel Electra af Askö ceased survey operations due to a heavy swell and left to moor at the Port of Hanko. The Estonian multi-purpose icebreaker EVA-316, in turn, headed to the Port of Lehtma to wait until the swell subsides enough for Electra af Askö to be able to resume operations.

The operations performed yesterday, on 9 July, included testing and calibration of equipment; measurement of key seawater parameters: visibility, oxygen content, etc.; surveying of the wreck with a multibeam sonar; dropping of a device for measuring the direction and speed of the currents; and commencement of the processing of the collected data. The processed data will be needed for subsequent surveys.
